Before approaching the TMJ treatment, it is important to understand how the problem begins and what the symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder are.

TMJ Syndrome, Causes:

  • One of the most common causes of jaw joint syndrome is teeth clenching or grinding, known as bruxism. Most often it is associated with pressure, creaking and very severe erosion of the teeth and a lot of strain on the jaw joint.
  • Of course any jaw injury can move the joint off its axis and cause pain and problems.
  • Also arthritis, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can cause joint problems and jaw pain.
  • Even wide yawning can cause the jaw to deviate off its axis and cause a jaw joint disorder accompanied by discomfort or pain.

What are the symptoms?

  • Jaw pain is of course the main symptom.
  • Swelling can also happen.
  • Locking your jaws or your jaw may be difficult to open and close.
  • You may hear a clicking sound as you move your jaw.
  • Sensitivity in the jaw muscles.
  • Sometimes headaches.

Your dentist can help you identify symptoms and confirm that TMD syndrome is the cause of these symptoms.

TMJ treatment:

There are few steps you can take at home to get immediate relief from the symptoms.

  • Cooling with ice or heating applied to the sore spots can help relieve pain.
  • Also a relaxation massage for the jaw muscles.
  • Painkillers can also help. No prescription needed.
  • Chew carefully, follow a soft diet when the pain intensifies.
  • Do not chew gum.
  • Beware of habits like nail polish, pencils or chewing ice.
  • Give your body time to recover.

If you wake up with pain in the facial muscles or jaws due to teeth grinding, behavior that occur more frequently at night, your dentist may recommend that you use a night guard while you sleep to prevent gnashing of teeth and locking of the jaws and reduce inter-jaw pressure.
