We all wish for a whiter smile, with some of us opting for home teeth whitening kits or trying other home methods like baking soda to whiten teeth enamel. Unfortunately, this is not always the safest option and you will waste time and money over and over again if you do not find the root of the problem.

Stained teeth is a common issue that many of us face and can be caused by a
variety of different factors.

While some factors for stained teeth are out of your control, other factors are can
be influenced, factors that are usually related to our daily lifestyle, diet, hygiene or
even certain pills that you take.

Stains on teeth appear on the surface or under the tooth enamel. Although there
are many different reasons that cause stained teeth, we will explain to you some of
the most common causes and how you can remove these stains to get a brighter
smile.

Diet

Stains from pigment residues (commonly found in foods and beverages) can
accumulate on the protein layer that covers the enamel. Over time, these residues
can turn a yellowish-brown hue and may cause stained teeth.

Common foods and beverages for staining include: coffee, tea, carbonated
beverages, wine and some fruits and vegetables, such as: Blueberries and cherries.

smoking

One of the most common causes of stained teeth is cigarette smoking, which results from tar chemicals and the nicotine found in cigarettes.

Smoking can yellow the teeth in a short period of time, which is why many long-term smokers sufferer from yellow teeth even brown due to excessive smoking for many years.

Poor oral hygiene

Poor oral hygiene is a common cause of extremely critical dental problems, so of course, it can also cause stained teeth.

After consuming sugary foods or beverages or even smoking, the pigment residue can accumulate in the protein layer surrounding the tooth enamel, which can cause external stains when the teeth are not cleaned properly.

If you have difficulty maintaining oral hygiene, tooth enamel can gradually turn a brownish-yellow color and the result is stains on the teeth. For this reason, you need to make sure that you brush your teeth regularly twice a day (for two minutes at a time) using fluoride toothpaste and also floss between your teeth.

Medication

Certain medical treatments can cause discoloration of the teeth (stains on the teeth), including antihypertensive pills, antihistamines, tetracycline, doxycycline, mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine and citylpyridinium as well as chemotherapy treatments.

Depending on the amount of pills and the length of treatment, teeth can stain sooner or later, so you should know that not all causes of tooth stains are due to poor oral hygiene. It can be frustrating for those who have no choice and must take pills on a regular basis, it leaves them more sensitive and less confident in showing their smile.
