Sensitive teeth, why does this happen?

One third (1/3) of the population in Israel suffers from the phenomenon of sensitive teeth! It most often occurs in women more than men, in the age range of 25-45. Sensitivity usually appears while drinking or eating something cold, sweet or sour.

It can also appear just after drinking or eating, in the form of a strong, short seizure for a few seconds. For some people the sensitivity can appear even when breathing cold air, in winter for example.

How is dental sensitivity diagnosed?

The diagnosis is confusing and not straightforward and is performed at the dental clinic. Patients who complain of sensitive teeth come to the clinic with the feeling that they have a “tooth ruin”. Sometimes it is even difficult to convince them that there is actually no hole, it is just sensitive teeth.

The diagnosis is made on two levels: X- ray and clinical

The dentist first examines clinically that there is no hole, crack or fracture in the tooth and then verifies the examination with the help of an X-ray. If there is no evidence of a lesion in the clinical examination as well as in the X-ray examination, then you probably suffer from sensitive teeth.

Note that in some situations usual RX is not enough, especially in situations of small cracks, and a CT RX is needed to reach a diagnosis. This CT radiography is taken only after a period of waiting and monitoring so as not to risk unnecessary radiation unnecessarily.

Sensitive teeth, why does this happen?

The main cause of sensitive teeth is dental dentition. Dentin is the main component of the tooth, the dentin is made up of very small canals called tubules which contain extensions of the nerve and can cause sensitivity.

The dentin is protected in its crown part by the tooth vitreous (enamel), the hardest bone material in the body. Damage to the tooth enamel, receding gums or bone resorption can cause hypersensitivity in the teeth.

Dentin exposure reasons:

There are several reasons

Teeth grinding:

The chewing forces exerted on the tooth cause excessive erosion of the protective layer of the tooth (enamel) and then the dentin is exposed.

pay attention:
Tooth erosion is both traumatic to the gums (can cause receding gums) and traumatic to the bone (can cause bone resorption).
