Body piercing was a popular form of expression. Roman soldiers pierced their nipples. Egyptian pharaohs pierced their navels. These days, the most common are ear piercings. But since the late 1980s, there has been a growing interest in mouth piercing. It can be on the tongue, lips or even cheeks.

However, piercing in and around the mouth are far more dangerous than those in your ears. Your mouth is hot, humid and home to millions of bacteria.

Do you have difficulty remembering to regularly brush your teeth, rinse your mouth and floss?

Beware, mouth piercing increase the need for oral hygiene otherwise you will harm the health of your mouth. Here are some complications to consider.

Primary complications from piercing

  • Infection from the piercing process is the most common. What can be life-threatening if your tongue, for example, swells and blocks your airways!
  • Sensitivity or pain are also common symptoms.
  • It is not uncommon to experience a feeling of local anesthesia or circumcision after the procedure. Often it is
Temporary, but sometimes it can be permanent. Prolonged nerve damage can affect your ability to taste food and talk as usual.
  • Expect prolonged bleeding if blood vessels are damaged. Bleeding in the mouth is particularly severe and difficult to control. It Can cause a medical emergency.
  • The wound may allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause a general infection that can affect the entire body. In some cases the infection can reach the heart and cause inflammation of the heart valve known as endocarditis.
  • Maintain a site of pierced earrings using careful oral hygiene and mouthwash after every meal.

Long-term complications

  • The tendency to “play” with piercing with the tongue can damage the gums or teeth. This can lead to sensitive or cracked teeth.
  • There are also reports of an allergic reaction to the metal manifested in skin rashes or hypersensitivity and inflammation.
  • Tongue piercing can cause increased saliva production. Excessive saliva can produce mucus and make speech difficult.
  • There are also reports of swallowing pierced or even suffocating earrings. Be sure to regularly check your piercing lock to prevent disengagement.
  • Veneers, crowns and other restorations may be damaged by repeated contact with the piercing earrings.
