Diabetes is a growing problem in Israel and around the world. Millions of adults suffer from this disease but more than a quarter of those who live with it do not realize they have a life-threatening illness.

Diabetes is a great example of how your oral health and overall health are related. The disease can increase the risk of gum disease, and gum disease can contribute to the progression of diabet.

The relationship between oral health and general health

Your mouth and eyes may show early signs of diabetes.

People with this disease are more likely to develop gum disease, which can also lead to tooth loss. Gum disease can also make it harder to manage diabetes by raising blood sugar levels.

Other oral health problems related to diabetes include:

  • Caries (cavities)
  • dry mouth
  • Burning mouth syndrome
  • ֿOral infections
  • Food tasting problems.

In addition, diabetes can affect your vision by damaging small blood vessels in the retina.

That is why periodic inspections are so important. Even if you may not have known you have diabet symptoms, your dentist or optometrist may notice them during a routine checkup.

An oral examination can help detect more than 120 diseases, including diabetes, showing early symptoms in the mouth and jaws. During the test, the dentist or dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar that can lead to gum disease.

Those diagnosed with diabetes may need to visit the dentist more often for cleaning and preventative care.

Early detection is critical

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the world. There is no cure for this severe chronic disease. It affects the way your body converts food into energy and puts you at higher risk for serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputations.

Diabetes symptoms include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Frequent urination
  • Wounds in slow healing
  • tiredness
  • nervousness
  • And blurred vision.

People who experience any of these symptoms should inform their doctor, dentist and optometrist. They can work together to diagnose your condition and help develop the most appropriate treatment and management plan for you.

Tips for preventing and managing diabetes

Not all types of diabetes can be prevented. But routine dental checkups and vision tests can help detect diabetes early, while a healthy lifestyle can help lower blood sugar and manage the disease.

Steps towards better health include:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and foods rich in fiber like beans and whole grains.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Avoid tobacco and moderate alcohol consumption.
  • Brushing twice and flossing once a day.
  • Visit the dentist regularly.
