When I was a little kid I was told that a crown on my tooth makes me a king.
I was so proud to have a dental crown. As I grew up I realized this was wrong and started to research.

What is this crown?
What does it do and why?
Is it good or bad for a tooth?
And many more questions you probably asked yourself.

So let’s get organized and understand what is the matter with the crowns on teeth.

What is dental crown?

A crown is a complete coating of a tooth that covers the entire surface of the tooth.

Why do we do dental crown?

The requirement for a dental crown is health in order to maintain the tooth. Especially after root treatment. Treatment that weakens the tooth. But not only, there are many tooth injury situations due to trauma or tooth decay, a crown in such situations can prevent further deterioration and keep what is left of the tooth. It is important to note that there is also an aesthetic requirement for crowns for crooked or stained teeth or defective teeth. In such situations, a crown can return the optimum aesthetic to the tooth.

How to make a dental crown?

The process begins with the dentist, grinding the existing tooth. Why? Because if we build the crown on a non-sharpened tooth, the crown will look huge. Dentist must make space for the crown to wrap the tooth most beautifully. After grinding, dentist takes a measure that is sent to the lab, where a cast model is made that simulates your teeth and the dental technician can build the final crown on it. Of course, until this crown is ready, your dentist or technician will make sure you have a temporary crown that will secure your tooth until the work is done and also maintain a reasonable aesthetic appearance.

What is a dental crown made of?

There are many types of crowns:

1- Temporary crown:
built of acrylic (type of hard plastic)
2- Porcelain fused to metal crown:
a crown whose base is metallic (noble metals such as gold or alloy of semi-noble metals)
3- Zirconia Crown:
A porcelain crown with a base made of zircon (a hard diamond like metal and white as a tooth)
